Central Philippine University, based in Iloilo City, is one of the best universities in the Philippine Visayas. Also commonly referred to as Central or CPU, it is a private research university. It was established in 1905 through a grant given by the American business magnate, industrialist and philanthropist, John D. Rockefeller under the auspices of the American Baptist Foreign Mission Society as the first Baptist founded, and second American, university in the Philippines and Asia (after Silliman University (1901) in Dumaguete).
